## What the numbers mean

- **Litres a day** is the maker's figure in its own test conditions. Most compressor figures are at 30°C and 80% humidity and the desiccant ones at 20°C and 60%, so the two types aren't directly comparable. In a UK home in winter expect a lot less from a compressor model.
- **Tank** is how much water it holds before it stops. A bigger tank means emptying it less often; most models also take a hose for continuous draining.
- **Noise** is the manufacturer's figure, usually on the lowest fan setting. Every 10dB sounds roughly twice as loud, so 38dB and 48dB are very different in a bedroom.
- **Works down to** is the lowest room temperature the manufacturer says it runs at. Compressor models collect much less water well before they reach that figure.

Noise figures aren't measured the same way by every brand, so treat small differences with caution. [Choosing a quiet dehumidifier](https://homecomfortlab.co.uk/damp/best-quiet-dehumidifier/).
